ExL Thermocouples insulated with Mi-Dry

AccuTru’s unique ExL thermocouples are  manufactured using a new ceramic insulation material called MI-DryTM in place of commonly used Magnesium Oxide (MgO).  Rigorous tests and extensive customer installations show that AccuTru’s ExL line of thermocouples provide superior performance. AccuTru’s MI-Dry material is a new proprietary dielectric compound that is an inert, powdered ceramic insulant with the same MSDS properties as MgO but with significantly improved characteristics in areas critical to high temperature measurement in process control. Benefits of ExL Sensors made with MI-Dry:
  • ExL Sensors are drop-in relplacements for the MgO sensors you currently use.
  • Connect to existing signal conditioners or transmitters with no wiring changes.
  • Longer life means more up-time, lower maintenance costs and fewer sensors.
  • Some high temperature thermocouples that use platinum elements, may utilize ExL sensors instead, providing significant savings on initial up-front costs.
  • MI-Dry is non-corrosive to metals, which eliminates “Green Rot” common in MgO type thermocouples.
  • MI-Dry is non-hygroscopic and does not trap moisture, which plagues MgO users, leading to shunting, shortened life, and erroneous readings.
  • Virtual Junction Errors are reduced or eliminated using ExL thermocouples made with MI-Dry.
  • ExL Thermocouples are available in most configurations and sizes.

High Temperature Thermocouples

For tough high temperature applications

Thermocouples for high temperature applications, usually above 2300°F require different construction materials.  Except for some specialty exotic metals, most metals reach there upper useable limits around 2300°F or slightly above.

Most often, high temperature sensors are built using ceramic or metal-ceramic protection tubes and platinum-platinum/rhodium thermoelement wires.  These carry letter designations S, R, and B.  NOTE: Type B does not provide accurate readings below 500 degrees.

THE S, R, and B thermocouples work well in oxidizing environments.   For reducing environments you will need to use Tungesten/Rhenium thermocouples, which carry letter designations of W or (C, D, or G) designations.

AccuTru’s ExL High Temperature Thermocouples are built using treated high density alumina protection tubes to insure the longest possible life or AccuTru’s proprietary HD247 protection tubes

Tube Skin Thermocouples

Virtually Eliminate Virtual Junction Errors
Tube skin thermocouples fabricated with AccuTru’s ExL technology, using MI-Dry mineral insulation deliver superior performance by reducing or eliminating virutal junction errors (VJE) therefore giving a true reading at the sensor tip.

AccuTru also offers a variety of weld pads, including or V-Pad, which decreases the risk of spearation of the sensor from the tubes, along with custom designed heat shields to improve sensor performance.

Custom RTDs

Made with MI-Dry

Resistance Temperature Devices (RTDs) are an alternative to thermocouples for temperature measurement in the range from ambient to 600°C or 700°C (1112 – 1282°F). The RTD uses a small platinum element in the tip of the sensor that measures temperature by the change in the resistance of the element created by heat.

The primary advantage of the RTD over thermocouples is the accuracy of the reading. The error limits are much smaller as compared to thermocouples (0.3 or 0.7 degrees at 100°C for the RTD and 1.1°C for the thermocouple. However, this advantage is balanced by some limitations. As noted, the upper temperature range is about 1/2 that of a thermocouple. In addition, the response time of an RTD is slower than a thermocouple if that is critical to your operation. The third limitation is that RTDs are very suceptible to damage from vibration or being dropped.

AccuTru RTDs use the 385 curbe which meets IEC751 tolerances. All RTDs are manufactured using wire wound bulbs. Thin film RTDs are available upon request. All AccuTru RTDs are manufactured using AccuTru’s MI-Dry mineral insulation, providing improved performance and longer life.
